Tips for Spring Cleaning
Spring is a beautiful time of new beginnings, so whether your year has gone your way or not, we have a dedicated time to reevaluate and make any necessary changes. One of the best ways to do this is with spring cleaning. It’s easy to think of spring cleaning as just wiping the kitchen counters and dusting the fireplace mantle, but it can be a lot more comprehensive than that.
If you want to fill in the gaps on your spring cleaning checklist, then keep reading for all of our must-clean spots.
Flush Your Water Heater
Did you know that your water heater needs to be cleaned? We don’t just mean dusting the exterior of the tank. If your home has hard water, which most do to some degree, then that means there are minerals in your water supply. Those minerals, over time, will separate from the water and sink to the bottom of the tank. This mineral collection can cause rust to form at the bottom of the tank, which will impact your home’s water quality and could cause premature breakdowns of your water heater.
Keep the Air Clean
Indoor air quality is incredibly important for your health. We spend more than 90 percent of our days indoors, and indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Make sure that the air you’re breathing in is clean and pure all year long.
Air Filters
How often do you replace your home’s air filters? They should be swapped out every 90 days at least. However,, a few factors will require you to change them more frequently. For instance, if you have pets, young children, anyone with allergies or illnesses, or anyone who smokes, we recommend changing your air filters every 30 to 60 days instead.
This will help your filters to trap more dirt, dust, allergens, debris, and bacteria instead of allowing them to seep through a dirty filter.
Duct Cleaning
Your air ducts are responsible for directing and depositing all of the temperature-controlled air from your HVAC unit into the rooms of your house, which means if they’re dirty, every room in your home is dirty. Unfortunately, air ducts are the perfect place for dirt and dust to accumulate, so to keep them clean, make sure to schedule semi-annual duct cleanings so that you can keep debris from circulating throughout your home.
Clean the Carpets
Another place that loves to trap dirt and dust are your carpets. Every time you step foot inside of your home, that dirt is transferring from your shoes and into your carpet. Vacuuming your carpets should be a part of your weekly routine in order to minimize the amount of dirt that circulates through your home and, consequently, your air.
Clean Your HVAC Unit
Do you normally clean your exterior HVAC unit? If not, you should. We recommend cleaning your HVAC unit about twice a year, more frequently if your unit appears dirty in between those cleanings.
Keep a clear radius of about 2 feet around the external unit. Remove tree branches, shrubs, leaves, dirt, etc. This will prevent loose debris from blocking the unit and dirtying or damaging the condenser and evaporator coils. The dirtier the coils are, the harder they have to work to keep your home at the desired temperature, making your system far less efficient.
